Actually had to use 0S 2 at the beginning of my career in IT. The power unit in the server room I worked in was last inspected in 1979 (this was circa 2010). Payroll company operating off a COBOL Mainframe. Had to use OS2 to boot it up!

The bank I worked at as of a few months ago was running its back office databases on COBOL still. Extremely unintuitive and it didn’t play nicely with all the newer programs that were supposed to continuously pull information from it. The other overlaid systems were supposed to give a veneer of user friendliness, but you couldn’t get everything you needed that way. The only person in my office who was fully adept at using it was one lady in her 60s who had been working for us since 1986.

OS/2 is still frighteningly common in these days, although becoming rarer. Lots of older ATMs run on OS/2.

The Boeing 737 MAX uses a 16-bit computer because that’s the hardware the FAA approved of, so...
And a friendly reminder that the F-22's computer security plan is, “no one knows how to write in Ada 83 lol”

We were told one of the advantages of keeping customer information on such an old system was that it was harder to hack, but I’m pretty sure it was mainly because moving everything over to something newer would be expensive and cause possible business interruption/downtime. They are going to have to make a change at some point, though, when the last of their older employees retire and there’s nobody left to ask how things work or who can troubleshoot when something goes wrong.

There was a post doc in the neighboring lab who had them all running OS/2 in PCs for desktop use. The DOS support was pretty good.
